MASSENA - Massena Business Development Corporation Executive Director Thomas Sullivan said its his understanding that Dicks Sporting Goods will not be locating at St. Lawrence Centre due to conditions in the franchises lease agreement that mall management is not comfortable with.
Dicks has some very restrictive clauses in their lease agreement, which have likely eliminated the possibility of Dicks locating there, Mr. Sullivan said, referring to the sporting good retailers originally-intended Massena home.
Officials with St. Lawrence Centre declined to comment on the status of Dicks potentially opening there.
Once it was determined the mall wasnt probably going to happen, I think he (Michael Wachs, who owns the Harte Haven Shopping Center) stepped in to try and bring them here, Mr. Sullivan said.
Whether that will happen at the corner of state routes 37 and 420, Mr. Sullivan said, is up to the town and village boards to decide.
The ball is in their court, he said. They have to decide whether or not they want to sell or option the property.
And while Mr. Wachs cited an email from Mr. Sullivan saying that an appraisal on the lot was going to be taking place, Mr. Sullivan said to the best of his knowledge no such appraisal has been ordered yet. He said that step would have to be approved by both the village and town board.
Town Councilman Samuel D. Carbone Jr., who serves as the towns liaison to the BDC said he personally would like to see them locate at the mall.
I think we all would rather see them at the mall, just to help save them, he said.
Mr. Sullivan said he doesnt care where Dicks locates, but if they were to locate anywhere in Massena it would be beneficial to the community.
We would love to see them here, somewhere, he said.
BDC Board of Directors member Daniel S. Pease said that over the years since hes purchased the plaza, Mr. Wachs has been very good to Massena.
Michael Wachs has been very good to this community. He purchased that plaza and has not abandoned it, Mr. Pease said. Hes an aggressive developer, but he has been a good partner to Massena. Youve got to give him credit. He knows his business and he does it well.
