POTSDAM - Canton-Potsdam Hospital and the Tobacco Cessation Center of Northern New York are offering free counseling on tobacco and smoking cessation for CPH employees and the community.

Beth Gero, Ph.D., cessation intervention specialist, will conduct the clinics and explain strategies for quitting smoking, identifying triggers for nicotine cravings, and choosing healthy ways to get past those cravings.

“The smoking rate is down to 18.15 percent in New York state,” Gero said. “Our mission is to reduce smoking prevalence to as close to zero as possible.”

The Tobacco Cessation Center of Northern New York was established in 2004 with a grant from the New York State Department of Health and the Tobacco Control Program. The clinics are based on an intervention model known as The Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use & Dependence – 5A’s: Ask about tobacco use, Assess willingness to quit, Ask me to Quit, Assist in quit attempt, Arrange a follow-up.

The workshops will be held at 4 p.m. April 24, May 8, May 22, June 5 and June 19 in conference room b of the main hospital (summer sessions will be announced in June). The sessions are free and open to the public.

Individuals interested in quitting or supporting a loved one in quitting are welcome and encouraged to attend. Attendees will have nicotine replacement therapy patches, lozenges and gum available to them free of charge to help them quit smoking.
