MASSENA - The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a three-day, 60 mile walk that raises money for breast cancer research and will be held this year in San Diego.
Among the participants in that will be Alisa Lobdell of Massena and her friend, Mandy Bishop, formerly of Massena and now residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
To help raise money for the event, as well to cover their expenses to get there, the women are holding a father, daughter dance from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge in Massena.
While Ms. Lodbdell said she has never been to a father daughter dance, her brother has, and he thought it would make a great idea for a fundraiser.
Im hoping to raise enough to cover what I need to raise, which is $2,500, she said.
Admission to the dance is $20 per couple, but dads are welcome to bring more than daughter to the event. Additional daughters are $10 each. Tickets will be available at the door.
This will be my fourth year doing the walk, but my first time doing this dance, Ms. Lobdell said, adding this years walk will be held on Nov. 21, 22 and 23.
Last year, she said the walk was held in Arizona.
It was 85 and beautiful, she said. I dont think you could do a 60-mile walk up here in late November. It would be pretty cold.
DJ Dan will be providing entertainment for the dance, and each girl will receive a beaded bracelet or necklace. Carnations and photographs will also be available for a nominal fee.
Mr. Lobdell said shes hoping to have photos from the evening available that day, but if not, photographs will be promptly mailed.
Ms. Lobdell said she was drawn to the event after going through a cancer battle in her own family.
When my son was eight years old he had lymphoma, she said. Theres really any events out there for that, but I figured if they find a cure for breast cancer, maybe that one will be next.
People who would like to contribute to the effort but are unable to attend Saturdays event may do so on-line by searching for either Ms. Lobdells or Ms. Bishops name.
