To The Editor:

Dear Courier Observer and Massena Residents:

I was asked to respond and comment on yesterday’s (Tuesday’s) reported news of the village and town board’s having voted to engage a firm to appraise the Massena Annex land for a “proposed” Dick’s.

My first and foremost comment is that we are all in this together. Everyone in attendance at that meeting, the village and town board members, Mayor Hidy, BDC Executive Director Sullivan, Supervisor Gray, Massena’s Sports & Recreation Commission members, the members of the press, the passionate and devoted families of Massena’s young hockey phenoms all have a hand in helping to shape a brighter future for the community.

There is no “us” against “them” here. It is only “we.” At least that is my view.

I repeat again that like all of Massena’s residents I learned of Dick’s interest in locating in Massena when it had first been reported by the Courier Observer.

I think it will serve us all well and we would be wise to remember that it was Dick’s who found Massena and it was not Massena who found Dick’s. When I saw that the proposed Dick’s development at the mall would not become a reality I tried to step in and see if I could help make this happen elsewhere in Massena while “the puck was still in front of the net.”

I immediately reached out to Dick’s and their representatives, (Yes I really am in contact with them), and suggested to Dick’s that they consider the land between Grove Street and Wal-Mart. They immediately rejected this alternative site.

It was at that time that I suggested the Massena Arena area as I thought it could enjoy the synergy of being a part of the Harte Haven Shopping Center and both strengthen it and be strengthened by it if they were to locate there.

Mayor Hidy and Supervisor Joseph Gray rightly and quickly dismissed this first idea and the second option surfaced where the Massena Arena and Dick’s could in effect be situated “shoulder to shoulder” much like the Home Depot and Wal-Mart SuperCenter.

I have stated to BDC Executive Director Tom Sullivan that I will pay for the cost of this appraisal as long as it is conducted by a reputable firm such as Cushman and Wakefield.

I am of the firm belief that if the many pieces of this puzzle can be put together it will result in a major major win for Massena as Dick’s is not simply just another retailer. They are in fact the preeminent and number 1 sporting goods retailer in America boasting almost 500 stores.

If Massena were to land them at the very epicenter of the community...Wow.

“Dream big and dare to fail.”

Respectfully

Michael Wachs
