Massena golfers open NAC season with split in Malone


MALONE — The Massena golf team opened the 2014 NAC Division I season by gaining a split against Potsdam and host Franklin Academy on Monday at the Malone Country Club.

The Raiders combined to shoot a 231 in posting the win over the Sandstoners (289) while falling to the Huskies (218).

FA newcomer Logan Lamb, a Salmon River transfer, tied for medalist honors with Massena’s Kendrick Swamp, as both golfers carded 39s for nine holes on the front side of the West Course.

Lamb’s teammates, Cole Depuy and Davis Sprague, finished with a 42 and 43, respectively, while newcomers Adam Dumas (45), Blake Pritchard (49) and Nathan Hunter (52) had their first taste of varsity golf.

Brenden Dobbins and Jason Hammill shot 44 and 47, respectively, for Massena, while Riley Clark (52) was low man for Potsdam. Aidon Clouthier and Zach McDonald followed with a 53 each to pace the Sandstoners.

In other Division I golf, OFA beat Brushton-Moira 255-221 and Madrid-Waddington downed Gouverneur, 239-253.


In Division II season openers on Monday, Norwood-Norfolk fell to Tupper Lake 4.5-.5 while Heuvelton tied Canton and edged Edwards-Knox 3-2 in a tri-meet at Deerfield Country Club. E-K outshot Canton 4-1 to come away with a split.

Tupper Lake 4.5, N-N .5: At the Raymondville Country Club, Beau Catimon accounted for the only scoring for the host Flyers by managing a 52-52 tie with Alex Lewis in the third pairing. Freshman Brandon Palmer had the low round of the day for N-N with a 47, including a birdie on the par five opening hole, but fell to Riley Amell, who carded the lowest score of the meet with a 41.

In the other matches, Josh Pickering downed Ty Cotter 44-54, Tyler Clark beat Jacob Levison 46-49 and Ben Geiger outshot Austin Ward 49-56.

In the non-scoring sixth pairing, Liam LaMere of Tupper Lake outshot Isaac Barkley 46-55 while the girls division saw N-N’s Jayden Young card a 47 and Tupper Lake’s Megan Pickering post a 56.

The Flyers return to action on Wednesday at home against Heuvelton starting at 3 p.m.
