PIERREPONT - After receiving four bids for a town hall roofing project last week, Pierrepont town officials have elected to go with Northern Tier Contracting at a price tag of up to $57,000.

Labor provided by the Gouverneur-based company will include replacing the existent roofing with asphalt shingles.

Northern Tier, whose bid includes a $20,000 amount for contingency, was the lowest of the four bids.

“As far as the scope goes, it’s a full replacement of the roof material all the way down to the substrate. We’ll put new plywood on, we’ll put new asphalt shingles on, etc.,” Building Committee member Anna Thomas said. “That’s pretty much the extent of it.”

Bids ranged from Northern Tier’s $57,000 to Gouverneur Roofing’s $110,571 bid.

Town attorney Eric J. Gustafson was in attendance Tuesday night to go over financial aspects of the project with board members and suggested they consider a bond anticipation note.

“I recommend that you prepare a bond resolution and set up a special meeting. I recommend that you bond for the full amount and then if you decide you don’t want to use it you don’t have to, but at least it gives you the flexibility to spend up to that amount,” he said.

“So the recommendation is that we’re going to award Northern Tier (Contracting) to re-roof the Pierrepont Town Hall at a price not to exceed $57,000,” Councilman Roger Murray said. “The alternate amount (from Northern Tier) would be if we went with the metal roofing instead and that would have added $9,700 to the base bid. But we’re going to go with the asphalt with a contingency of $20,000 and so this bid actually is $37,000 with a contingency of $20,000. We built that in and hopefully we won’t use it, but you’ve got to have something in there in case anything pops up.”
