SUNY Potsdam laxmen host Plattsburgh in SUNYAC tournament opener today

POTSDAM - The SUNY Potsdam men’s lacrosse team will host a SUNYAC men’s lacrosse playoff game for the second time in four years this afternoon at the Maxcy Hall turf field.

The second-seeded Bears will be facing the third-seeded SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals at 4 p.m.

Leading Potsdam’s offense is senior captain Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y.) with 28 goals and 28 assists for 56 points on the season. With two points against SUNY Geneseo this past Saturday, Kunz moved into ninth place on the program’s all-time scoring list with 130 points.

Sophomore midfielder Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y.) is second on the team in scoring with 25 goals and 11 assists for 36 points. Sophomore attackman Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y.) is has scored a career-best 26 goals and five assists for 31 points.

Anchoring the defense are seniors Jake Gyder (Liverpool N.Y.), Jeff Love (Watertown, N.Y.) along with junior Nick Waseleski (Victor, N.Y.) and sophomore Kyle Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y.).

Between the pipes is five-time SUNYAC Goalie of the Week senior Ryan Duffy (Liverpool, N.Y.). This season Duffy has posted a .662 save percentage, tops in the SUNYAC and top-five in the nation. He is second in the conference in goals-against-average at 7.45 and has posted a 10-5 record. Duffy’s 10 victories are a single-season school record and his save percentage is second best in program history.

Top scorers for the Cardinals are led by Brendan Damm with 46 goals and 16 assists for 62 points. Second is Robbie Ashlaw with 30 goals and 24 assists for 54 points. Third for scoring is Tim Lawrence with 22 goals and 15 assists for 37 points.

In goal for the Cardinals is Andrew Hauk who has a .557 save percentage and a 7.75 goals-against-average.

At the same time, top-seeded and nationally-ranked No. 8 Cortland will be hosting fourth-seeded Oneonta. The winners of each game will play for the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday, May 3 on the campus of the highest seeded team.

Admission will be free for anyone attending tomorrow’s SUNYAC Semifinal men’s lacrosse game. The second-seeded Bears (10-5, 4-2 SUNYAC) will host third-seeded Plattsburgh State (12-5, 4-2) at Maxcy Turf Field tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. Potsdam is 11-5 in the all-time series with the Cardinals, including an 8-7 victory on April 9 in Potsdam.
