FORT DRUM - A Fort Drum soldier died Sunday from injuries sustained in what was described as a surprise attack on his unit in Afghanistan.
According to a report in the Daily Freeman in Kingston, Sgt. Shawn Farrell, 24, of Accord, was shot twice during the incident.
He was taken to Germany following the attack, where doctors were unsuccessful in their attempts to revive him.
Details of the incident were relayed to the paper by family members of Sgt. Farrell.
He served as an infantryman. His unit in the 10th Mountain Division was not listed.
Sgt. Farrell graduated from Rondout Valley High School, Accord, in 2008. The school district in a statement said learning the news of Sgt. Farrells death made Tuesday an extremely sad day for the entire community.
Sgt. Farrells death has not been formally announced by the Department of Defense.
The paper said he is survived by his wife of about a year, Allison, his parents Shawn Farrell and Heather Stokes, and stepfather David Stokes, as well as other relatives.
He is the third 10th Mountain Division soldier to die during a deployment this year, with the others being Spc. Kerry M.G. Danyluk and Pfc. Joshua A. Gray.
