CANTON — A car crash Friday afternoon on Route 68 sent two women to the hospital.

Canton Volunteer Fire Department and state police responded at 12:40 p.m. to the two-car crash. Troopers said April E. Loffler, 23, of 916B New York Ave., Ogdensburg, attempted to make a U-turn while heading southeast on Route 68 between Irish Settlement Road and Tully Road to check on what she told troopers was a turtle in the road.

Troopers said she did not see an Audi A4 behind her driven by Jean Joseph Bernard Kenol, 57, and occupied by his wife, Francoise, 54, their son, Jonathan, 18, and friend Joel P. Merceron, 58, all of Montreal, Quebec, and it broadsided Ms. Loffler’s Mazda 626, sending both vehicles into the northwestern shoulder.

“She was driving in front of us and then suddenly she did this,” Mr. Merceron said making a swerving motion with his hand. “We tried to get out of the way, but it happened all so fast.”

Ms. Loffler had to be extricated from her car by firefighters using a hydraulic rescue tool. She was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, by Canton Volunteer Rescue Squad for treatment of back pain and an injury to her left leg.

Mrs. Kenol also was taken to Claxton-Hepburn for treatment of head and chest pain. Troopers said Mr. Merceron, Mr. Kenol and his son also suffered minor pain in their heads and shoulders because of airbag and seat belt impact.

No charges have been filed.

Canton village police and Rensselaer Falls Volunteer Rescue Squad assisted.
