SeaComm named one of 2014 Best Companies to Work for in New York

MASSENA - SeaComm Federal Credit Union has been named one of the 2014 Best Companies to Work for in New York by the Best Companies Group.

SeaComm was among the award winners in the Small/Medium category with 15 to 249 employees.

“This is the fourth year we’ve been on the list. We’re pretty proud of it. We have been on it ,and we’re very pleased to be on the list again,” President and CEO Scott A. Wilson said.

He said there were 60 companies on the list, with many of them from New York City.

What makes the recognition unique is that it’s driven by surveys completed by the credit union’s employees.

The voluntary 80-question survey is conducted by Best Companies Group, an independent firm that manages Best Places to Work programs on state, regional and national levels around the world. They evaluate and rank the best places of employment in the state based on employee satisfaction, as well as workplace practices and policies. The survey includes questions in areas such as leadership, pay and benefits.

“The survey is independent. Each employee has the ability to participate in the survey,” Mr. Wilson said. “When they broke it down, are they willing to give extra effort to make the company succeed, 99 percent said, ‘Yes, I am.’”

The number of employees participating in the survey has risen since they first started, he said. Their participation rate was 59 percent the first year. This year’s participation rate was 89 percent.

“The bottom line is you expose yourself to the fact that you want to know what employees think about you,” he said.

Mr. Wilson said the credit union’s success and its receipt of the award are because of its employees.

“The bottom line for me is the company is successful because I have good employees. If I have good employees, they’re taking care of the membership. Therefore, my job is to focus on my employees. We have a very open and extremely respectful recognition-driven culture focused on the staff. I make sure the staff knows they’re an integral part of our overall success,” he said.

Mr. Wilson said he holds a CEO breakfast with new staff members when they begin their employment at SeaComm. He talks about the culture of the credit union, how they fit in and the strategic direction the organization is headed.

He also holds quarterly meetings with the staff at all of their branch locations.

“The message is as the CEO I’m not the most important person in the organization. My employees are. They’re the ones that work with members on a day-to-day basis and make SeaComm successful. My job is to ensure they know they are part of the success,” he said.

“I believe I’m in service to my staff. I have to give them the tools necessary to do their jobs and the support network they need to do it,” Mr. Wilson said.

“If a company truly wants to be successful, you have to truly focus and engage the employees. We do have high expectations and are committed to maintaining that standard. Fortunately, we have a team of talent, smart, hard-working people who take great pride in their work in taking care of our membership,” he said.
