Theresa Burkett, 79 of Mitchell, IN, passed away on October 28, at Indiana University Health Bloomington hospital, after complications from heart surgery. She was born on Jan 30, 1934; married Big Mike Burkett on Oct 4, 1954, and moved to Brasher Falls where they raised their family.

Survivors include five children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Linda (Phil) Neves also of Mitchell, IN, Kathleen (Ed) Valancius of Massena, Michele (Steven) Shampine, of Athens, TN, Michael (Laurie) Burkett of Hudson, NH and Patty Burkett of Pittsburgh, PA and grandchildren: Michael, Matthew, and Nicole Neves, Aaron and Isaac Burkett, Amanda Shampine, Andrew and Dominique Valancius, great-grandchildren: Ian & Jenna Burkett.; brother, John Hyatt; sister-in-law Ann Marie (Joseph) Giorgi, Dorothy (Woody) Burkett Higgins, Pearl (Daniel Henry) Burkett and Christina (Chet) Tacka; brother in-law Sidney Lafayette; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in Death by her husband Mike her parents Wilbur & Lucy (Gibeault) Gokey, her sisters, Becky Lafayette, Kate Prue and a brother, Ted Hyatt.

She worked at Wards Hotel, The Sunset Lodge, St Lawrence University, Blossoms Construction, Spring Mill Inn and Dollar General. She loved and found much joy in her family, friends and her cat Midnight. Her hobbies were scrabble, baking, sewing, puzzles and reading. She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic church in Mitchell, Indiana.

The memorial mass will be held at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brasher Falls, NY, on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 10AM Following the service, a celebration of her life will be held at The American Legion in Winthrop.
