LOUDONVILLE - For the second game in a row the Clarkson University baseball team would send the winning run to the plate, but the third-seeded Golden Knights could not complete the rally and fell to the fourth-seeded Vassar College Brewers 4-2 on day two of the Liberty League Tournament.

Clarkson ends the season with a record of 19-13 and finished fourth in the tournament. Vassar moves on to play the loser of this afternoon’s game between top-seeded Union College and second-seeded University of Rochester.

The Brewers got on the board three times before the Knights stepped up to the plate. Four straight singles against Clarkson senior Pete Roma (Endicott, NY) plated a pair of runs and a sacrifice fly would add another as Vassar jumped out to the early lead. Clarkson would get one back in the third inning as senior David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) would move him to third with a ground out and he would score on an error by the second baseman on a ball hit by junior Matt Jenack (Massena, NY). A bunt single from senior Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) would load the bases with one out, but Vassar starter Trent Berg would get the next two batters to strikeout to avoid further damage.

Clarkson would once again leave the bases loaded in the fifth inning and stranded 14 runners throughout the game. Vassar would add to its lead in the sixth inning as three more singles plated another run to make the game 4-1.

Roma pitched into the sixth inning, giving up nine hits and four runs over 5.1 innings.

After going down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, the Knights would rally in the eighth. Senior Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) would reach with a one-out infield single to shortstop, and junior Tim Beninati (Schoharie, NY) would single through the left side to give Clarkson a pair of runners.

Vassar would go to the bullpen after Berg tossed his 149th pitch, and junior Bobby Derico (Watervilet, NY) would immediately double to right center to score Mattingly and cut the deficit to 4-2. The Brewers would get a pair of groundouts to end the rally.

Sophomore Greg Jasek (Chittenango, NY) would lead off the last inning with a single up the middle and Jenack would hit a one-out infield single to shortstop to give the Knights a pair of runners.

The Brewers would get a strikeout and Mattingly grounded out to third to end the game. Berg earned the win for Vassar, going 7.1 innings and allowing seven hits while walking five. He struck out seven and surrendered both Clarkson runs.
