Massena octogenarian charged with shooting at squirrels in her backyard

ILLEGAL DISCHARGE FIREARM - MASSENA - Village police charged Marcella M. Bailey, 88, of 177 McKinley Court, Massena, with illegal discharge of a firearm at 12:50 p.m. Monday. Police said they responded to a complaint of shots fired on McKinley, and their investigation revealed Ms. Bailey had been firing rounds from a .22 calibre shotgun from the second story of her home at squirrels in the backyard of her village residence. Police said Ms. Bailey had a number of birdfeeders in her backyard. “She admitted she had put some bait in her backyard to attract the squirrels and was trying to kill them,” Sgt. Mark Englert said. Police said they were concerned shots fired from her residence could ricochet off the rock wall at the rear border of her property. They noted there are a number of children living in the neighborhood. Ms. Bailey was processed at the village police station and released on an appearance ticket for Massena Village Court.
