SLC softball pulls away to win over Massena

MASSENA - The St. Lawrence Central varsity softball combined a fast start with a strong finish to post a 14-1 NAC interdivisional decision on the road over Massena Central on Wednesday.

Senior Lindsey Thayer went the distance for the win, striking out nine and walking none while scattering six hits as the Lady Larries worked their way to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings the broke the game open with a five-run barrage in the sixth that put them ahead 13-1. Freshman Amber Thomas (5K, 4BB) pitched into the sixth inning in taking the loss Reaghan Peets came on to finish out the game.

Thayer also played a lead role offensively going 5-5 with a double, triple and four runs scored. Haleigh Agans singled, doubled and scored three times. Chelsea Savage contributed two hits and two runs scored. Natasha Barnhart, Tera Douglas, Liz Lynch and Hailee Weegar all singled and scored a solo run.

Thomas, who singled earlier in the game, launched a triple and scored the lone Lady Raider run in the fourth inning in front of an RBI-single by Taylor Day. Chelsea Streeter, Bailey Dillabough and Steph McKeel had the other Massena hits.

The Lady Larries (14-0, 12-0) are slated to host NAC East rival Madrid-Waddington today starting at 4:30 p.m. while Massena plays at Central Division rival OFA on Friday.

In the Central Division matchups played on Wednesday, Canton blanked Salmon River 9-0, Gouverneur outscored Potsdam 24-4 and Franklin Academy beat OFA 21-0.

Canton 9, Salmon River 0: In Canton, the Lady Bears scored three times in their first at-bat and never looked back for the win as Beth Pearson struckout seven and walked four while limiting the Lady Shamrocks to just three hits. Brittany Brooks (3K, 5BB) was saddled with the loss.

Kalie Frank led the way offensively for Canton going 3-3 with a run scored. Person was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. Chantel Rose singled, triple and scored a run. Cianna Wilmart was 2-3 with two runs scored while Mead singled twice and scored once.

For Salmon River, Kera Ghostlaw, Melanie Taylor and Taylor Armstrong each singled.

Gouverneur 24, Potsdam 4: In Gouverneur, the Lady Wildcats led 11-3 after two innings then broke the game open with a 10-run surge in the third. Alexis Rowe went the distance for the win.

Offensive leaders for the Lady Wildcats were; Mackenzie Rowe (4 hits, double, 5 runs scored), Taylor Andrews (4 hits, double, 4 runs scored) and Alysia Whitton (3 hits, 2 triples, 8 RBI, 2 runs scored).

Kelsey Green (2 RBI, 1 runs scored) and Megan Oney (2 runs scored) connected for two hits each in the losing cause.

EAST DIVISION

In the lone NAC East Division softball matchup on Wednesday, Norwood-Norfolk outscored Tupper Lake 22-9.

A 14 run second inning sparked the Flyers past the visiting Lumberjacks. Bryanna Powerll fanned six in three innings of work and lined a double, Cortney Wagstaff pitched the fourth inning and stroked a single, and Gabi Cole delivered three scoreless innings of relief in a combined three hitter.Cora Young lined a double and a single, Alexis Delosh smacked a triple, Sara Darason ripped a double and Dana Bellardini and Jenna Fiacco each singled for the win.

Jordan Staves, Jessie Morgam and Alana Richards each singled for Tupper Lake.
