CANTON — The Massena Central varsity girls lacrosse team clinched at least a share of the 2014 NAC regular season banner on Friday by claiming a rain-soaked 13-8 win over Canton Central at the SUNY Canton turf field.

Mimi Lazore anchored a balanced attack with four goals as the Lady Raiders moved to 10-1 in the NAC heading into their finale this morning at home against Saranac Lake starting at 10 a.m. Jacelyn Lazore chipped in three goals followed by Shannon Casey with two while Devin Kelly, Trysten Burns and Meagan Morgan connected for the others.

“We lost four key players from last year and we’re very young. It’s been frustrating at times but it’s also been very exciting to see us do as well as we have,” noted coach Jeffrey Slack after the Lady Raiders moved one win away from a fifth straight regular season title.

Tess Knight led the way offensively for Canton with four goals. Rachel Huntley, Claire Bartlett, Emily Pinckney and Mimi Husinec each netted singletons.

Felicity Love turned in another solid effort between the pipes for the Lady Raiders, turning aside 14 of the shots she faced while Felicity Love had 12 stops for the Lady Golden Bears.

Massena was coming off a 14-9 win over Heuvelton this past Wednesday. Jacelyn Lazore tallied six goals and one assist. Courtney Manley fashioned four goals while Mimi Lazore added three goals and one assist. Burns (1 assist), Casey and Kelly scored the other goals while Love stopped eights shots.

As the lone Class B school in Section 10, the Lady Raiders gain an automatic bid to the NYSHSAA tournament which starts with a game against the Section 3 champion on Thursday, May 2. Before heading into the state playoffs, they will face the Section 10 Class C champion in an overall title game on Tuesday, May 27, at the SUNY Canton turf field starting at 6 p.m.

The sectional Class C tournament opens on Monday with a pair of first round games. Potsdam, the top seed, and Canton, the second seed, both draw first round byes before hosting semi-final round games on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Class C final is slated for Thursday at 5 p.m. at SUNY Canton.
