Massena firefighter receives Academic Excellence Award at New York State Fire Academy

MASSENA - Village of Massena Fire Department Firefighter Justin Niles recently graduated from the Recruit Firefighter Training Program held at the New York State Fire Academy located in Montour Falls.

Firefighter Niles graduated at the top of his class, receiving the Academic Excellence Award, which is the highest award a firefighter can receive will attending the New York State Fire Academy.

The Recruit Firefighter Training Program is a physically and mentally rigorous eleven week training program. During this training, Firefighter Niles earned National Certifications in Firefighter I, Firefighter II and Hazardous Material First Responder Operations.

Firefighter Niles also received numerous state certificates in the following areas; Apparatus Operator – Pump, Truck Company Operations, SCBA Confidence, Firefighter Survival, Courage to be Safe, Rescue Technician – Basic, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Accident Victim Extrication, Flammable Gas Emergency Response Workshop, Confined Space Awareness and Safety, Fire Prevention for the Recruit Firefighter, and Version 5 Fire Reporting Workshop.

Along with completing and passing the Recruit Firefighter Training Program, Firefighter Niles passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), which is required to graduate from the New York State Fire Academy.
