MADRID: Joseph W. Hughes, 90, of County Route 14, Madrid, passed away peacefully early Tuesday afternoon May 20, 2014 at the St. Regis Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Madrid. A funeral Mass will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday May 23, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Church in Madrid with Rev. Msgr. Harry Snow presiding. Interment will follow in Madrid Cemetery with full military honors. Joe was born on December 4, 1923 in Madrid, the son of John and Anna (O’Brien) Hughes. After graduating from Madrid High School Joe continued his education at A.T.I., and served proudly in the Army Air Corps, and then graduated from Clarkson University. Joe married Nancy Holmes on Aug. 29, 1957 at St. John the Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Dewey presiding. He worked for IBM and retired in 1987 after nearly 45 years of service. He owned and operated Holmes Grocery in Madrid along with his wife for many years. Joe was a charter member and past commander of the Madrid American Legion Post #1513, charter member of the Potsdam Elks Lodge B.P.O.E #2074, and member and past chief of the Madrid Fire Department. Joseph is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy; a son Mark Hughes and his wife Heather of Hannawa Falls, NY; daughters, Linda and her husband Richard LePage of Massena, NY; Connie and her husband Tim O’Brien of Niskayuna, NY; and Patty and her husband Dickie Ogden of Gansevoort, NY. Also surviving Joe are seven grandchildren; Chris, Emily, Joe, Ian, Hannah, Brodey, and Carson along with several nieces and nephews.
