Arrest of alleged heroin pushing miscreant should have received better play in the newspaper

To The Editor:

I was reading the May 22 edition of the Courier-Observer and on page A6 there was an interesting article about the arrest of a heroin pushing miscreant by the name of Elvis E. Pigott. He was arrested by the Drug Task Force (great work, by the way) and is currently languishing in our fine county facility where he gets three hots and a cot at our expense, no doubt waiting for bail to be set by the county judge. So he should be back on the street anytime now.

Now, this is the problem, isn’t it? People like this are bringing this crap into our county and dispensing it among our citizens (at least those stupid enough to use the stuff) and instead of being kept in confinement until they are convicted and sentenced, they are offered minimal bail or release to the probation department so they can continue with their service to their customers.

I’m upset enough about the way the criminal justice system handles these cases post arrest. (This is not meant to include the DA’s Office. Mary Rain did yeoman’s service when she filed papers to get Nick Hillary back into confinement so he couldn’t hightail it to Jamaica), but I am also steamed at the Courier-Observer for the publicity they gave this thing. Page A6.

Come on. This guy should have his mug pasted right on the front page with good sized headlines. Instead what do we have? A couple Clarkson students sitting in loungers enjoying nice warm sunshine.

Now that’s real important news, right? And to add insult to injury the Courier-Observer article headline about Pigott reads “Massena man facing felony heroin counts.”

Well I’ve got some news for you, Courier-Observer. I’m willing to bet this guy is about as much a Massena native as I am a Nepalese Sherpa.

Do not associate people like this with our community just because they provide some shack-up address in this village. They are not natives of Massena and they don’t belong here.

This arrest is a good thing and it should have gotten commensurate publicity. Adequate publicity coupled with a nice long prison sentence sends a strong message to the rest of Pigott’s ilk. Stay out of St. Lawrence County or you will be taking a long vacation at taxpayers expense.
