To The Editor:

The argument over Labor Agreements has been around for 30 years and both sides are steadfast in both their defense and their criticism.

I would like to take a moment to discuss an issue that I feel is of greater importance to our communities and to our workers; regardless of their union or non-union affiliation.

In recent years, the north country has been targeted by out of state contractors and their traveling workforce. Dozens of contractors have worked in the north country and have undermined the local construction industry as a whole. When a contractors and their out of state workers take their profits and their paychecks out of our area each week, we all lose.

This is a problem that impacts both union and non-union contractors and unfortunately continues to cost our local construction workers valuable work opportunities. It is a very real problem with very real consequences.

I extend an invitation to all of you to join me in asking our local and state elected officials to ensure that projects in the north country are performed by a motivated and skilled workforce that also calls our county home. After all, we live here, educate and raise our families here, pay taxes here, and we have earned the right to make a living here.

We have always taken great pride in steady and meaningful work which is why I feel the local worker issue is vitally important to our industry and to the future of the north country. Our commitment to hard work, our communities and to our families is what makes this part of the state so special!
