POTSDAM - Members of the Potsdam Central School District Teachers Association have received a new one-year contract that will carry them through the 2014-2015 academic year.
Potsdam Central School District Superintendent Patrick H. Brady said the possibility of a merger definitely played into the length of the deal.
We had discussions of continuing with a one-year contract to provide us with some time and see if the merger process will be successful, Mr. Brady said. If the merger occurred ,there would be open negotiations for a new district.
The contract was approved by a vote of 5-0-2, with Board President Christopher C. Cowen and J. Patrick Turbett abstaining.
Mr. Cowens wife is a teacher in the district. Mr. Turbett has a daughter who teaches in the district. Board members Danielle Gray and Ralph Fuller were not present.
Mr. Brady said there were no major changes in the contract with each of the 28 salary steps remaining the same.
Teachers off of the ladder will receive a 1 percent salary increase.
Mr. Brady said there are six teachers in that category and those raises will cost the district $4,500.
The superintendent also noted that teachers do contribute to the cost of their health insurance, with the 8 percent contribution remaining unchanged.
