Village of Massena receives $100,000 grant for road repairs

MASSENA - During a visit to Massena on Wednesday Sen. Joseph A. Griffo announced a $100,000 grant for the village that will be used to fix two of its streets.

“Good infrastructure is an integral part of a healthy economy,” Sen. Griffo (R-Rome) said. “I know how hard this winter was on our north country roads, so I was pleased to assist the village in securing these needed funds.”

Mayor James F. Hidy said the money will be used to make repairs on Liberty and Garvin avenues.

We’re going to utilize portions of the money for repairs on some of our most critical streets, such as Liberty and Garvin avenues,” he said.

Mr. Hidy said those two roads, which were already in need of repairs before the winter, were among the hardest hit this past winter season.

“These roads were hardest hit during the deep freeze of winter, causing structural damage to the roads that required immediate attention,” he said.

In discussions with the senator, Mr. Hidy asked for assistance to extend the life of the road and to protect passenger vehicles from potholes and other road damage.

“The village certainly appreciates the support that Senator Griffo continues to give to us and to the north country,” Mr. Hidy. “He truly understands our needs and is a strong advocate on our behalf. We appreciate the funds and will be using them to repair as many roads as the budget will allow.”

Given the village’s tough financial situation, Mr. Hidy said these funds will help replenish money that was cut from the Department of Public Works budget, during the village board’s effort to present its taxpayers with a fair and reasonable budget.

Sen. Griffo made the announcement during a meeting with Mr. Hidy on Wednesday. Following the meeting, Sen. Griffo traveled to the high school, where he presented a resolution honoring the boy’s hockey team.

Sen. Griffo said the grant comes from the state and municipal facilities capital fund, which is part of the 2013-14 state budget.

Mr. Hidy said the village was thankful for the grant.

“We would like to give tremendous thanks to Senator Griffo for recognizing the needs of Massena,” Mr. Hidy said. “He continues to be a strong advocate for our community in Albany.”
