City police are warning residents to be wary of receiving a phone call from a woman using the name of “Theresa Johnson” claiming to be from a bank in the state of Vermont and seeking $300 in order to provide a check in exchange for a larger cash prize.

Authorities say the phone scam is being perpetrated from the telephone number (609) 601-5597 Extension 245. After getting a caller on the line the woman claims that the resident contacted will win a large amount of cash and that the check for the prize money will be delivered only after a $300 fee is paid to cover insurance costs, according to police.

Police urge residents not to give out any personal information if they receive the call and not to meet anyone related to the phone scam. Residents who think they have been duped by the phone scam can call the Ogdensburg City Police Department at 393-1555.
