Stockholm town clerk retiring from her post on June 30

WINTHROP - Stockholm Town Clerk Mary Jo Thompson has announced plans to retire from her post on June 30.

But after one day of retirement the Stockholm Town Board is expected to name Ms. Thompson as the interim town clerk for the remainder of the calendar year. The remaining unexpired year on her four-year term will be on the ballot in November.

Ms. Thompson has served as Stockholm’s town clerk for 19 years and worked for 12 years for the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections.

Ms. Thompson is one of just five women who have served as Stockholm’s town clerk over the past seven decades. Her predecessors have included Freda Frary (1981-95), Jaqueline White (1973-81), Duana Carey (1966-73) and Agnes Murray (1942-65). James A. Gage served as the first town clerk in 1984, according to the town records.
