HAMMOND - The Hammond Central School District Board of Education has appointed Robert B. Wagoner, Jr., as interim superintendent of the district Tuesday after the board was unable to choose between its top two candidates.
School board members were unable to reach a consensus after interviewing candidates George F. Merritt and Ronald A. Camp last month.
Both candidates toured the school, sat for several interviews, and met with the community and students.
School Board President Timothy W. Pitcher said the board was pleased with Mr. Wagoner’s experience.
Mr. Wagoner retired in December 2013 as the superintendent of schools for the Alexandria Bay Central School District, a position he held for seven years.
Mr. Wagoner has worked in the education field for 40 years, beginning his career as a mathematics teacher in 1973.
Mr. Wagoner will start July 1.
“We’re looking at a short-term appointment,” Mr. Pitcher said. “We’re hoping to make a permanent appointment by the end of the year.”
Mr. Wagoner’s predecessor, Randy C. Richards, will serve as superintendent of schools in Waverly beginning July 1.
