CANTON - Unemployment rates for May are down from last year in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties, according to statistics released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor.
St. Lawrence County had a rate of 7.7 percent, down from 9.1 percent in May 2013. Jefferson County had a rate of 7.5 percent in May, down from 9.1 percent in May 2013, and Lewis County had a rate of 7.4 percent, down from 9.2 percent over the same period.
While May rates in Jefferson and Lewis counties fell from April, when they were 8.2 and 8.7 percent, respectively; St. Lawrence County’s rate remained even at 7.7 percent.
Across the 52-county region in upstate New York, the May unemployment rate fell from 7.2 to 5.9 percent compared with a year ago. Statewide, the rate fell from 7.5 to 6.4 percent during the same period; nationwide, the rate fell from 7.3 to 6.1 percent.
