COLTON - Upwards of 100 children are expected to march down Cottage Road in Colton Saturday, sporting patriotic garb for a belated celebration of Independence Day.

The Colton youth parade begins at 10 a.m. and has been taking place in the hamlet for a decade.

“I’ve been appointed as someone who helps and organize the event,” Lianne Knight said. “(The parade) was started by a person who had a camp at Higley (Flow), and they did it with their nieces and nephews - about 12 people. ... It continued to grow and now it all comes out through the Higley Association. It has expanded to about 100 kids who participate.”

The march begins Arbuckle Lane, goes down Cottage Road and wraps up on Gulf Road.

“It goes on Cottage Road and takes about 20 minutes to go from end to the other. Kids decorate their wagons, their dogs and themselves and have a great time with it,” Ms. Knight said. “Many years we have had a percussion group that do a street beat too.”

The organizer added that the parade is primarily for the children, but it gets the onlookers involved as well.

“It starts at 10 a.m. and a lot of people come out and watch the kids,” Ms. Knight said. “The kids are given goodie bags while they are walking and throw them out to the people who are watching and it is a blast.”
