CANTON — After more than four months without its four-legged deputy, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department reinstated its K-9 unit Tuesday.
The unit was suspended on Feb. 28 due to a shortage of personnel in the department, Undersheriff Scott F. Bonno said.
But with the recent graduation of three new cadets from the David Sullivan-St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy at SUNY Canton, Deputy Andrew J. Ashley was able to return to his duties in the K-9 unit alongside his partner of six years — Hershey, a 7-year-old chocolate Labrador.
The decision to suspend the unit in February was a difficult one, Undersheriff Bonno said, adding that “K-9 Hershey is a highly valued service and investigatory asset utilized by the department in its day-to-day operation.”
“Having the cadets graduate from the academy and take an active role in the department will enable us to better handle our investigative and transport mandates which will also allow Deputy Ashley to work with his K-9 as necessary,” Mr. Bonno said.
