MORRISTOWN - The Morristown Firecracker 5K produced first-time run medalists in the North Country road racing circuit on Saturday morning.

Two OFA track-field and cross country products in Joey Grizzuto and Kurstyn Macaulay made a smooth transition from high school racing to the open road ranks.

Grizzuto, an OFA senior, led the men’s field forging a 20:03-20:39 margin of victory over another strong Under 20 Division runner in Andrew Salmons. Morristown native and longtime educator in the Indian River School District Bryan Moore placed third overall from the 30-39 Division in 21:11.

Grizzuto plans to run as many road races he can in preparation to carry out a senior leader role in cross country and track-field in the 2014-2015 school year.

“I really hope we can do very well as a team and I was hoping a few more of our runners could have been here today,” said Grizzuto.

“I was very happy with my time. The large hill makes this a tough course and they told me that it is actually a little bit longer than a 5K.”

Macaulay plans to pursue a career in physical education by attending Jefferson Community College for two years and then transferring SUNY Cortland where she hopes to run collegiately.

“I have already talked to the Cortland coach about running when I get there. I hope to run in a club at JCCC and budget my time so I can stay in shape,” said Macaulay who is a Morristown Central graduate.

“Hopefully everything will work out and I can take it where it goes.”

Macaulay, who placed third overall in 20:59, also led a 1-2-3 overall finish for the Under 20 Division where Amanda Schuman took second in 23:13 and another OFA distance runner Sarah Mitchell placed third at 23:30.

Ogdensburg’s Terry Farrell led the male walkers with a 35:47 followed by John McCullough at 43:09 and Alan Mooney at 43:58.

Linda Moore led the lady walkers in 43:30 followed Erin Pigeon in 44:22 and Carrie Montgomery in 44:27.

The first edition of the Morristown Firecracker 5K was a fund-raiser for the youth activities of the Morristown Recreation Department.

The leaders of the One Mile Run among the boys were: Jack Mills 8:17, Ivan Kring 8:55 and Aaron Woodcock 8:55.50. Emillie O’Donnell was the first girl to finish at 9:35 followed by Mackenzie Moore 10:28.32 and Kylie O’Donnell 11:49.26.

Race Director Chris Woodcock considered the event a major success and offered his thanks to Ogdensburg Pepsi Cola for sponsoring the event, and providing the inflatible start-finish arch, the Morristown Fire Department, all the volunteers who worked at the race and to OFA Track-Field Coach John Tebo for timing the race and providing the system to collect and categorize the results.

“I was hoping for 100 participants and we had 88 which was very good. This was a very successful fund-raiser and we will work hard to make it bigger next year,” said Woodcock. “I want to thank every who participated, Pepsi Cola, the fire department, all of the volunteers and to coach John Tebo for his assistance in timing the race. He made it very easy to take care of the results and awards.”
