MASSENA — With no Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce car show to piggyback off of this year, members of the Massena Volunteer Fire Department said they are unsure what to expect when the department hosts its annual summer chicken barbecue this weekend.
Department spokesman and Past Chief Thomas C. Miller said volunteers will be cooking 350 half chickens that will be available for consumption starting at noon on Saturday.
Mr. Miller said the $10 meal will also include macaroni salad, baked beans, a roll and either soda or water.
Serving will begin at noon, and Mr. Miller said it will continue throughout the afternoon until all the chicken is sold.
Mr. Miller said meals will be availabe for eat-in, takeout or delivery. For devliery, please call the fire hall at 769-2390 after noon on Saturday.
When asked whether people should show up early to ensure they receive a meal, Mr. Miller acknowledged he wasn’t sure.
“This is going to be a little different this year because we’re not piggybacking off of the car show,” he said. “We don’t know what to expect.”
Mr. Miller said this weekend’s meal is one of two chicken barbecues the department holds each year and therefore an important fundraiser for Massena’s volunteer firefighters.
While it is uncertain how exactly proceeds from the barbecue will be spent, Mr. Miller said at least a portion of them will likely be used to help fund the Northern New York Volunteer Fireman’s Association annual convention, an event that Mr. Miller said could bring up to 2,000 firefighters and their families to Massena in 2015.
“Part of this might be used for the convention, because that is a costly event to put on,” he said.
