PARISHVILLE — Richard A. Perkins is doing more than talking about politics by deciding to run for the St. Lawrence County District 7 seat that is being vacated by Legislator Scott M. Sutherland, R-Pierrepont.

“I’m hoping I can help,” Mr. Perkins said.

Mr. Perkins is a Republican who switched parties, but his registration as a Democrat will not take effect until after the general election. He will run on the Democratic line in the general election against Jerry G. Moore, a Republican.

He said he was asked by county Democratic Chairman Mark J. Bellardini to consider running for the position as a Democrat after Mr. Sutherland announced he was stepping down.

“We got talking local politics. That’s where it really starts. I did a lot of thinking about it,” Mr. Perkins said. “I’m not really a party-liner. I think we should all work together.”

Mr. Perkins likes some of the vision of the county Democrats, including an interstate highway, which he said he believes could help bring jobs and keep young people from leaving the area. He said he likes the multitrail system that is being developed by the county and would like to see more focus on tourism. His background is in business administration and finance, and he said he believes his knowledge would be helpful with the county budget.

“I’m not going to claim to be an expert,” he said. “I can read numbers.”

Regardless of whether district voters pick him or his opponent, he urged them to go to the polls and make a choice.
