WADDINGTON - The team of Ogdensburg’s Bob Marceau and Clayton’s Dick Garlock have been known to draw big dividends from long runs toward the 1000 Islands region during area bass fishing tournaments.
On Saturday they decided to go downriver toward Massena, instead of upriver, and the “road less travelled” led them to first place in the Northern New York Bassmasters Team Trail Tournament out of Waddington.
The veteran duo combined for a 21.59-pound bag in a close race with Nick Eells and Joe Clary who placed second at 20.57 pounds in just their second club tournament.
Gary Rayner and Kyle Dominie took third at 19.32 and Dominie landed the lunker of the tournament with a 5.45-pound smallmouth bass.
Fourth place went to Chris Backus and Paul Streeter at 18.18 pounds.
“We don’t normally go that way but we found some good spots when we prefished. Today the fish were there but they just weren’t as active as we would like,” said Marceau.
“We fished in shallow water all day. I stuck with my favorite spinner bait looking for the more active fish and Dick used a drop shot to go after the less active fish.
