Massena and North Country Collision of Potsdam both survived close calls on their home fields in the opening round of the North Country Women’s Soccer League playoffs on Tuesday.
Massena 1, Madrid-Waddington 0: At Mike Nicholas Field, Kaleigh Zappia converted off an assist from Bailey Fregoe with 10 minutes left in regulation to lift the host team to the win.
Courtney Manley turned asdie 15 shots backstopping the win.
Massena will now head to South Colton to take on two-time defending playoff champion Dow Electric on Thursday at Swift Field starting at 6 p.m.
NC Collison 3, Brasher Falls 2 (OT): At the Route 56 field on the SUNY Potsdam campus, the teams battled to a 2-2 draw through 80 minutes of regulation before Amanda Sergi worked the ball ahead to Katie Vandevalk on the opening kick-off of overtime and Vandevalk converted for the game-winner.
Alex Stevenson also scored off an assist from Vandevalk while Megan Plumb made six saves backstopping the win.
Ashley Thayer netted both goals in the losing cause.
North Country Collision will now travel to Hogansburg on Thursday to face Akwesasne at Generations Field starting at 6 p.m.
The other two playoff openers on Tuesday saw Edwards-Knox turn back Gouverneur 2-1 and Heuvelton halt Harrisville 3-2. E-K will travel to Canton High School to take on Canton and Heuvelton will face FC Freeze at SLU in the other two Thursday evening quarter-final round games.
