RAYMONDVILLE - The Norfolk Post 925 Junior Rovers 16U baseball team closed out a successful 2014 summer season by claiming top honors in the Lion’s Club League.
Coached by Adrian Taraska and Rick Newtown, the Junior Rovers posted a 6-0 win over Chateaugay in the semi-finals before going on to outscore Malone 4-2 in the playoff final. With the wins, Norfolk finished with an 11-1 record.
Norfolk 6, Chateaugay 0: At Memorial Field in Raymondville on July 30th, Nathan Bressard crafted a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and just one walk through the seven innings to anchor the Rovers’ win. Offensively, the Rovers took control early with a five-run barrage in the opening frame. Tristen St. Andrews led the way going 2-2 with a triple. Jake Vierno doubled and Conner Paige rapped a single.
Rovers 4, Malone 2: This past Tuesday at the high school field in Malone, Merrick Taraska allowed a pair of first-inning runs then settled down to pitch six scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed four hits and walked four while Grant VanBuren sparked the Junior Rovers offense going 3-4 with a double. Shane Tiernan, St. Andrews, Taraska, Ryan Newtown, Vierno and Charles Price all chipped in solo hits. Paige drew a pair of walks and Nich McKeel walked once.
