Sheriff’s Department warning of AARP phone scam

CANTON - St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Kevin Wells says a phone scam in St. Lawrence County and beyond has been brought to the attention of local law enforcement offices.

He said callers identify themselves as someone from AARP and tell the person they’re offering a free senior alert system and $3,000 a month in coupons. They say they were provided the name by the person’s health care provider, and ask the person to press 1 to get free system or press 5 to notify their health care provider that they are not interested.

Mr. Wells said anyone who receives this call should hang up and not punch any options.

“AARP is aware of this scam of some ‘stranger’ using AARP’s name. They are trying to track down the origin of these calls. The public is advised that AARP does not and is not making these calls,” he said.
