MADRID - A Madrid town justice was charged with three counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law Wednesday evening after she was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident with her 5-year-old triplets in the vehicle and led police on a short case following the accident.

New York State Police charged Anya A. Tendler, 43, of Madrid with Leandra’s Law - aggravated DWI with a child passenger under 16 years of age, and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. She was also ticketed for reckless driving, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, moving from lane unsafely, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

Troopers said they responded to a report of a hit-and-run property damage accident at about 6 p.m. Wednesday on state Route 11, Canton. They said a 2000 BMW struck the back end of a 1995 Chrysler New Yorker operated by Thomas F. Donalis, 47, of Canton while both vehicles were eastbound.

They said Donalis was not injured, but the BMW failed to stop after the accident, continuing eastbound on state Route 11 toward Potsdam.

Troopers said they observed the BMW with front-end damage on state Route 11 and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Tendler initially failed to pull over. After initially failing to comply, she was stopped and taken into custody. They said Tendler’s 5-year-old triplets, who were not injured, were passengers in the vehicle. They were turned over to a family member.

Tendler, who police said refused testing to determine her blood alcohol content, was arraigned in Pierrepont Town Court and released under the supervision of probation, to reappear Wednesday afternoon.
