Francis G. Smith


Francis G. Smith, 96 of Lake Placid, Florida passed away Friday, August 15, 2014 peacefully at the Port Charlotte Rehabilitation Center, Florida.

Born July 4, 1918 to the late Walter Oral Smith and Lulu Lockwood Smith, Massena, he was raised and attended schools in Massena, New York. As a young man, he worked and learned the plumbing business with his father. In March 1939 he married Helen I. Steinburg of Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. During their marriage they built and operated the Motel Oral and Campground in Massena, NY. The union ended in 1961.

In January 1963, he married the former Janice Mack of Ithaca, NY. They owned and operated Seaway Campground with the help of his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Donna Smith. Upon the sale of the campground, he and Jan moved to Warren’s Trailer Park, Cape Vincent, NY. They enjoyed many winters in Fort Myers, Florida and in 2000, they moved to Lake Placid, Florida and resided there to present day.

In later years Fran became a master craftsman with wood. He won numerous awards for his wood furniture and was featured in many newspaper articles with pictures of his furniture displays. He made furniture when he was into his 90’s. Some of these pieces are on display at the Town Museum and the Emmanuel Congregational Church in Massena, NY.

Fran enjoyed bicycle riding, riding his moped and also was a shuffleboard Champion when he resided in Fort Myers, Florida. Fran was a member of the Masonic Lodge and avid churchgoer for the majority of his life.

Fran was predeceased by a son, Larry in 2000. Survivors include his wife Jan of 51 years; Two sons, Jerry and wife Susan (Wilson) Smith of Port Charlotte, Florida and Phil and wife Bonnie (Podgurski) Smith of Massena. Two daughters, Sharon and husband John Freeman and Marion McNeill (husband Doug – deceased) of Cape Vincent, NY. Also survived by a sister Jean Derosia of California, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and uncles. Fran was predeceased by 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

Per Fran’s request there will be no calling hours. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery (Cook St.) Massena, New York.
