MASSENA - Donna Huber may not be country music star Shania Twain, but she’s the next best thing, according to Shania Twain herself.

“I thought that was me for a moment…she’s the best one,” Ms. Twain said on Ms. Huber’s website. “I’m flattered that she is doing a tribute to me and I’m hearing great things about her.”

Ms. Huber will bring her tribute act to Massena when she performs at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Massena High School auditorium. The fundraiser, organized by the Massena Rotary Club, will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Massena.

Also appearing will be Adam D. Tucker with his Tim McGraw tribute. He will be the opening act, showcasing the mega-hits of Tim McGraw from the ‘90’s and beyond

“It’s a new project for Rotary. We’ll see how it goes,” Rotarian Susan Bellor said.

“We are so thankful to Rotary for their steadfast support of the club. They continue to step up to help the kids of Massena,” said Timmy J. Currier, president of the Boys and Girls Club of Massena Board of Directors.

Mrs. Bellor said Rotarian Ken Marlow had many contacts with celebrities over the years, including Ms. Huber, who hails from Ontario.

“I met her around 1997. I won’t be surprised if she opens in Las Vegas,” Mr. Marlow said.

The idea of bringing Ms. Huber to Massena for the benefit of the Boys and Girls Club of Massena was brought to the Rotary board, who saw her during an appearance in May at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort.

“We met her after her performance at the casino in May. From what we saw, she was wonderful,” Mrs. Bellor said.

After that, the Rotary board gave its approval, and the legwork began. But, she said, it’s been an easy event to organize thanks to Ms. Huber.

“As soon as I email her, she very readily responds to me. She’s very easy to work with,” Mrs. Bellor said.

Now the focus is on selling tickets, which are available at the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce, Phil and Jackie’s, or from any Rotarian.

“(Rotarian) John Murray is willing to go anywhere to sell tickets,” she said.

Mr. Marlow is also a big ticket seller, according to Mrs. Bellor.

“He’s always a major ticket seller in Massena,” she said.

Tickets will also be available at the door. All seats are general admission for a donation of $25.

“The stub comes off and there will be door prizes before the start (of the concert),” Mrs. Bellor said.

So far tickets sales have been good, she said.

“I have not had a problem selling tickets,” she said.

Some tickets have also been given away. The Daily Courier-Observer, for example, received complimentary tickets for a contest running on the newspaper’s Facebook page.

“We’re hoping for a good crowd so we can give a good amount of money to the Boys and Girls Club,” Mrs. Bellor said.

“It helps publicize the Boys and girls Club. Other communities with a Boys and Girls Club have been very successful,” Mr. Marlow said.

In addition to the concert, attendees can buy pictures or have their pictures taken with Ms. Huber. There will also be a meet-and-greet following the concert.

The Rotarians said those who attend the concert will enjoy themselves, as they watch and listen to a woman who has spent countless hours practicing to sing like Shania Twain, watching her videos over and over, and studying to emulate her moves and the way she presents herself.

It was while she was living in Sudbury, Ont., that Ms. Huber first heard comments about how she resembled Shania Twain. She met with an agent in the music business and the rest is history, as they worked to put a band together, practiced for a few months and then began hitting the stages.

She has been on the road throughout Canada, the United States and Europe since 1996, and has appeared on a nationwide CBC special and a TNN special from Nashville. In addition, Ms. Huber entertained the Canadian troopers in Bosnia, Croatia and Dubai, played the Calgary Stampede for three consecutive years, and has also recorded a duet with Canadian recording artist John Mackintosh.

Mrs. Bellor thanked the Massena Central School District for allowing them to use their venue and their assistance with lighting and sound, She and Mr. Marlow said sponsors have also enabled them to offer the benefit concert. Mr. Marlow has done much of the legwork in rounding them up.

“We have a good number of sponsors helping out with advertising. We’ve really had some tremendous support,” Mrs. Bellor said.
