Clarkson women’s volleyball splits opening matches

POTSDAM — The Clarkson University volleyball team gave top-ranked Calvin College a scare Friday night before falling in five sets in their second match of the day.

Clarkson (1-1), ranked No. 20, opened the tournament with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-17 sweep of Simmons College.

The Golden Knights twice held leads over Calvin, taking the opening set 25-23 and the third set 25-22.

But Calvin answered with a 25-20 win in the second set and took the win by claiming the fourth set 25-14 and the final set 15-11.

CANTON WINS PAIR

SUNY Canton opened its own tournament by sweeping SUNY Potsdam 25-20, 25-19, 25-9 and then sweeping Houghton 25-22, 25-14, 25-20.

Kelsy Cornish led SUNY Canton against the Bears with eight kills and Mackenzie Mynter added 26 assists. Rachel Topf picked up 18 assists for SUNY Potsdam.

Caitlin Grimshaw led the Kangaroos with 13 kills against Houghton. Jessica Reynolds led SUNY Canton with 25 assists and Mynter added 25.

SUNY Potsdam defeated SUNYIT in five sets in its second match.

SAINTS SPLIT IN CORTLAND

St. Lawrence University opened the season by splitting a pair of matches in the SUNY Cortland Tournament.

SLU opened with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 sweep of Rochester and then was swept 25-17, 25-14, 25-15 by the host Red Dragons.
